Will Work For... Cash?

Bonsoir,
As I am sure you have noticed, I haven’t posted in a few days. Pourquoi? Because I have absolutely nothing to report. I am living vicariously though you both as things progress so wonderfully in your lives. Flora: Engaged! Rose: The interview Queen! How can I compete?! Please keep the exciting news coming before I meurs d’ennui!

In other news, I had dinner with my boyfriend’s family last week and his grandmother had some thoughts on internships. Actually, just one thought: They’re dumb! She is not a fan of “slave-labor” and believes that internships are the corporate world’s way of legally owning slaves. Harsh. It did get me thinking though… There once was a time when an intern had to get school credit for her time served (yes, time served, it is a sentence after all!) or she had to receive a stipend (Does that word still even exist??). Somewhere along the line, some very clever person at the top obviously found a loophole forcing hundreds of thousands of girls just like myself to work full time for “work experience” and nothing more. My boyfriend's grandmother is a smart lady, she prefers her work experience with a side of paycheck!

So I’m wondering... When did it become the norm to work for nothing? A recent glimpse at my bank statement shows an awful lot of money going out but nothing coming in. Between the metro trips to and from and the 16 euro salads from overpriced cafes, I have a surplus of work experience but a major deficit at la banque! Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do and I am thrilled to be at such a great magazine, but sometimes a girl just needs to get paid!

How much more can we take?  (We being moi and HSBC!)

Gros bisous,

Ophelia
